Choosing a Cat Weight Loss Diet

Introduction

Once a cat becomes overweight, it can be an uphill battle trying to help your cat lose weight. Certain types of commercial weight loss recipes have been developed to help cats lose weight, and there are some types of supplemental recipes that pet owners can use to help cats lose weight as well. Cats have very particular nutritional requirements, and it is very difficult to create a solely home cooked diet for cats which contains all of the cat’s nutritional needs.

Choosing a Weight Loss Diet

The best type of commercial weight loss recipe for cats is a diet which promotes active weight loss. These types of commercial diets are high quality diets that have been specifically formulated to help your cat continually lose weight. Active weight loss diet foods are more expensive than regular cat foods, but they are worth the cost if your cat needs to lose weight. If you decide to use this type of diet for your cat’s weight loss needs, make sure that you feed the recommended amount according to your cat’s weight.

If you switch to a weight loss diet food for your cat, and your cat continually seems hungry, you can use supplemental weight loss recipes to help your cat lose weight. Most of these recipes focus on helping your cat to feel full, without adding extra calories to the diet. Only give your cat these supplements after your cat has eaten the recommended allowance of diet cat food. Some weight loss supplemental recipes include: water lightly flavored with chicken broth, small amounts of light fish meat, or the left over water from canned fish meats.

Cats are strict carnivores, and home cooked weight loss recipes will need to focus on this particular feline dietary need. While some cats may eat vegetables in order to feel full, these foods should not be used as part of the cat’s regular diet. If you are considering feeding your cat a diet based on home cooked meals, keep in mind that nutritional deficiencies may develop if you do not give your cat a complete diet.
